Dayton Hamvention 2006

The Dayton Hamvention 2006 will be held this year on 19 through 21 May 2006. This year is the 76th anniversary of the Dayton Amateur Radio Association, sponsor of Hamvention. It is anticipated that the attendance for Hamvention will be larger in 2006 than in previous years. Make your reservations early for all AMSAT activities!

As has been the case for the last several years Hamvention will be at the Hara Arena Complex on the north side of Dayton. Further information on Hamvention 2006, including advance ticket sales and motel accommodations, can be found at www.hamvention.org.

AMSAT has a limited block of rooms reserved at the Hampton Inn in Fairborn. Please contact Martha at the AMSAT office for room price and availability for Hamvention. The phone number for the AMSAT office is 301-589-6062. Priority for rooms will be given to those who are willing to work in the AMSAT booth for two 2 hour shifts during Hamvention. Other hotels in the immediate area of the Hampton Inn include the Fairfield Inn, Ramada Inn, Fairborn Holiday Inn, Red Roof Inn and the Homewood Suites if additional accommodations are needed.

If you are eastbound on Col. Glenn Hwy turn right on the road between the Taco Bell and Bob Evan's Restaurant. Proceed through the 4 way stop and the motel is on the left-hand side at the end of the road. There are several local restaurants in the shopping area in front of the motel and about 1 mile away at the Fairfield Commons Mall. The GPS coordinates are listed below.

Again this year the Upper Valley ARC has given AMSAT permission to use their repeater system (call is N8GTE) during Hamvention. The 2 meter repeater is on 145.41 - .6 MHz with a PL tone of 118.8 Hz. There is an UHF repeater (call N8GTE) available on 442.375 +5.00 MHz with a PL tone of 118.8 Hz. These repeaters are within a mile of the AMSAT hotel site. Reception of the repeater between the Hamvention site and the motel is possible on either repeater.

Thursday 18 May 2006

Thursday morning there will be a group that sets up the booth for AMSAT at Hamvention. If you are interested in being a volunteer please contact Gould Smith at wa4sxm@amsat.org. Gould will also be taking names for those who wish to work in the booth during Hamvention.

The Sixth Annual AMSAT 'Pizza 'n Suds' party will be held again this year at Marion's Pizza at 1320 North Fairfield Rd. The party will begin at 6:30 PM and go until the crowd disappears. Individuals may order their food from the menu and drinks (beer, wine, sodas and iced tea) are available at the bar. Directions and coordinates are listed below.

The party is open to all hams that are interested in amateur satellites. Come on in and make friends with some new hams. This is an excellent opportunity to have an eyeball QSO with some of the AMSAT satellite designers and officers in a relaxed and informal atmosphere.

Last year's event was well attended with over 70 satellite enthusiasts at the party. If you plan to attend please contact Nancy Makley (KC8GYW) in advance at kc8gyw@amsat.org and let her know how many will be in your group. We have 120 seats reserved for the party.

Driving Instructions to Pizza 'n Suds

From the Hampton Inn go to Col. Glenn Highway and turn right. Go approximately 1/8 mile to the intersection with N. Fairfield Rd and turn right and head south 3.7 miles. When you cross Old Route 35 you will see a shopping center on the left-hand side. At the intersection of N. Fairfield Rd and old state Rt. 35, there is a Sunoco gas station on your left and a Friendly's restaurant across the street. Marion's is directly behind the Friendly's restaurant. Go through the intersection and turn left into the shopping center. Marion's Pizza is on the left and slightly up hill as you make the turn.

From the downtown Dayton area follow US Route 35 East toward Xenia. Exit at North Fairfield Rd. and go north about 0.7 of a mile and turn right into the shopping center. Marion's will be on the left-hand side and slightly up hill as you enter the shopping center. APRS users should look for N8NUY-10 as a beacon. The coordinates for Marion's Pizza are listed below.

The AMSAT Educator's Forum will be held from 11:30 to 12:15 AM in Forum Room 5.

  • Dr. H. Paul Shuch, N6TX, Director of Education, AMSAT-NA "Shared experiences of using satellites in the classroom"

Although AMSAT's primary focus has long been the design, fabrication, launching, and operation of communications satellites for the use of the world's radio amateurs, its secondary mission is to efficiently exploit those satellites as educational tools. Beyond the excitement of a classroom, contact through a satellite, or with an astronaut aboard a space station, satellites provide an orbital classroom for instructional enrichment, in fields as diverse as mathematics, geography, social sciences, physical sciences, and technology. In this Forum, professional educators and educational administrators will be invited to share their experiences with satellites in the classroom. AMSAT seeks thereby to recruit a cadre of participating AMSAT Educators, who will develop the curriculum and instructional tools needed to enhance the use of satellites in 21st Century education, at all levels, K through Ph.D.

Enjoy Hamvention the remainder of Saturday and Sunday!
