Orbital launches Cygnus resupply to ISS on Antares rocket, carries new amateur radio satellites

Several new amateur radio satellites were sent to the ISS on the first Commercial Resupply Services (CRS) Cygnus mission from Wallops Island at 18:07UTC January 9th, 2014.

These satellites will be deployed from ISS over the coming weeks, using the NanoRacks CubeSat Deployer from the airlock on the Kibo module of the station. Check back for the deployment announcement.

Perhaps of most interest to radio amateurs are Lithuania’s first satellites, LituanicaSAT-1 and LitSat-1.

LituanicaSAT-1 carries an FM repeater with a 145.950 MHz uplink and 435.180 MHz downlink, a 9600 baud AX25 packet system with a 145.850 MHz uplink and 437.550 MHz downlink, and a CW beacon on 437.275 MHz. Detailed information may be found at http://www.kosmonautai.lt/en/satellite/

LitSat-1 carries a linear transponder of unknown bandwidth and with a reported uplink of 435.180 MHz and downlink of 145.950 MHz, a AX25 packet system with a 437.550 MHz uplink and 145.850 MHz downlink. UAPSAT is Peru’s third satellite, and will transmit AX25 packet telemetry and an audio message on 145.980 MHz. It is unclear whether there will be a two-way capability. FUNCube-1 now AO-73, transponder operational during eclipse

FUNCube-1 has applied for and been granted AMSAT Oscar 73 (AO-73). Congratulations to AMSAT-NL and AMSAT-UK!

After a brief periood of testing, AO-73 has been switched to autonomous mode, where the educational beacon runs at 300mw while the spacecraft is illuminated. During eclipse, the beacon runs at low power, and the mode U/V transponder is activated. (If any part of the footprint of the satellite includes a sunlit area, the satellite is illuminated. When the entire footprint is dark, the satellite is eclipsed)

Reports are in that many QSOs have been made, with generally strong signals. It should be noted that until Keplerian elements stabilize, full Doppler CAT tuning may not be very successful. When tuning manually the convention is to tune the higher of the two frequencies, in this case the uplink.

Frequencies are as follows:

• 145.935 MHz BPSK Telemetry 30 or 300 mW

• Inverting SSB/CW transponder 300 mW PEP

– 435.150 – 435.130 MHz Uplink (reports indicate this has shifted~10kHz higher)

– 145.950 – 145.970 MHz Downlink

Amateur Radio Satellites Ready to Fly on Dnepr Launch Nov 21

UPDATE: LAUNCH SUCCESSFUL!

Signals heard from Funcube-1 and Triton-1 on first pass over EU.

A Russian Dnepr rocket is set to launch on November 21 at 07:10:11 UTC from Dombarovsky near Yasny. This launch is expected to deploy 32 satellites, many of which are amateur radio or experimental using amateur radio frequencies.

Several of these satellites are expected to provide opportunities for two-way amateur communications via linear transponders, FM to DSB repeaters, or digital links.

NASA ELaNa-4 Cubesats Set to Launch Nov 19 with ORS-3 Minotaur from Wallops, VA

Eleven cubesats from NASA’s ELaNa Educational Launch of Nanosatellites program are set to launch on the ORS-3 mission on a US Air Force Minotaur-1 from Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia. Launch is currently scheduled for 2330 UTC on November 19, 2013, with a target orbit of 500km circular, and 40.5 degree inclination.

Cubesat.org recently published a list of those satellites in the amateur service, or those using amateur frequencies under an experimental license.
