December 12, 2004 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-347.02 1. Sorel-Tracy School Contact Successful On Tuesday, November 30, 2004, students from École secondaire Fernand- Lefebvre in Sorel-Tracy, Quebec, Canada spoke to astronaut Leroy Chiao, KE5BRW. They were able to ask and have answered 5 questions. An audience of approximately 300 students, teachers, and dignitaries, including the mayor, filled the auditorium, as the contact was broadcasted to the rest of the school via the intercom system. Radio and television stations, and local newspapers were present. One radio station, which is part of the National Canadian Broadcasting Network, broadcast the contact live. Another TV station taped the event and will use the footage on a program to be run on the Provincial Francophone cable network. This program is expected to be rerun several times on the network. The Les 2 Rives ran an article entitled, "Des jeunes de l'E.S.F.L. en contact radio direct avec des astronautes en orbite!" ARRL Article on Italy Contact On November 19, students from three schools in Polignano-a-Mare, Italy spoke to Leroy Chiao. ARRL Article on Next ISS Crew On November 30, ARRL ran a web story on the next ISS crew. Sergei Krikalev, U5MIR, and John Phillips will make up the Expedition 11 crew scheduled to launch in April, 2005. Expedition 9 Crew Debriefing The U.S. Expedition 9 crew debriefing is scheduled for Wednesday, December 15 at 2 pm ET. Mike Fincke, KE5AIT, will speak with Kenneth Ransom at JSC. The half hour session will allow the ARISS team to ask for recommendations on improving school contacts, and to ask technical questions concerning the radio systems. 5. ARISS Team Acquires Hardware The ARISS team has purchased 5 Kenwood VC-H1 Visual Communicators. The SSTV units will be used for testing and development.
