It is published every week and is made available for unlimited free distribution. * MIR NEWS * ============ The Mir space station has been visible during the early evening hours across eastern North America, and will continue doing so for the next few weeks. Shlomo, 4X4LF, in Israel reports that Mark Stern, 4Z4KX (ex-UP2OE), has recently returned from a short visit to Russia. While Mark was there, he went to Kaliningrad and met Sergei Samburov, RV3DR, who is the Chief of the Cosmonaut Amateur Radio progam. Mark had an "eyeball QSO" with two of the Cosmonauts he had contacts with while they were in the Mir Space Station - Aleksander Serebrov and Aleksander Polechouk. Serebrov held the call U7MIR when he was in Mir between September 1989 and February 1990, and R0MIR during his second stay in Mir, from August 1993 to January 1994. Polechouk was R2MIR during his stay in Mir from January 1993 to August 1993. Mark was able to visit the Mission Control Center in Kaliningrad, and also visited "Star City" near Moscow, home of the Russian manned space program and of many of the Cosmonauts. According to Mark, future Mir operations will be on 70-cm as well as 2-meters. The equipment has already been sent up to Mir and Samburov is training several Cosmonauts in its use at a duplicate station set up at the Training Center. However, the dual-band antenna base was broken in transit, and the antenna can't be mounted outside of the Space Station until a replacement is received. This should be well before the launch of crew number 20 (Yuri Gidzenko, R0MIR, Sergei Avdayev, U9MIR and a German Cosmonaut from the European Space Agency, Thomas Reiter) in August. * MALTA DX-PEDITION NEWS * ========================== Another DX-pedition is planned for a group of Dutch Amateur Radio Operators visiting Sliema on the island of Malta.
