SB SAT @ AMSAT $ANS-316.01 World Wide Web HR AMSAT NEWS SERVICE BULLETIN 316.01 FROM AMSAT HQ SILVER SPRING, MD. NOVEMBER 12, 1994 TO ALL RADIO AMATEURS BT BID: $ANS-316.01 New Internet Services from WWW.AMSAT.ORG AMSAT-NA would like to announce the availability of World Wide Web (WWW) services on the Internet. This new pilot project will make available a variety of hypertext documents, pictures, video, and audio materials related to the amateur satellite program. Users will need a computer with an Internet connection and a special browser program. The Web presents a very friendly, easy-to-use interface to a wealth of information on AMSAT's new server and on thousands of other servers worldwide. Graphical browser programs such as "Mosaic" are freely available for many popular computers, including the PC running Windows or OS/2, the Macintosh, and UNIX machines using the X Window System. Text-mode browser programs, such as Lynx, are freely available for text terminals attached to host computers. Most of the documents published through the Web server will also be available by anonymous FTP, for those with Internet access but without WWW capability. In addition, the FTP server will be a repository for all sorts of freely distributable programs and documents related to amateur satellites. To access AMSAT's Web pages, point your browser at . To access the AMSAT archives by anonymous FTP, ftp to ftp.amsat.org. Use the username "anonymous", and use your real email address as the password. The files are in various directories under "/amsat". Contributions are solicited. At this time, only a relatively small amount of information is available. If you have, or can make, a collection of electronic documents of interest to the amateur space program, please send email describing the material to Paul Williamson, kb5mu@amsat.org, who will be serving as editor. No collection is too small or too large. It need not be of interest to everyone, since it will be accessed only by a user's request, but should be related to the amateur space program in some way. It must also be in the public domain or accompanied by permission for electronic redistribution. Volunteers with access to appropriate equipment are needed to convert hardcopy photographs and diagrams, audio tapes, and video tapes into suitable digital formats. Writers are also needed to help create hypertext documents, to tie together the documents. Other volunteers may be needed to track down copyright permissions for existing documents. This project joins the AMSAT.ORG mailing lists as a service of the Electronic Publishing department of AMSAT-NA. To volunteer or for more information, contact Paul Williamson, kb5mu@amsat.org. ANS wishes to thank Paul Williamson, kb5mu AMSAT's Vice President for Electronic Publications, for this bulletin informatiom. /ex SB SAT @ AMSAT $ANS-316.02 Arctic Expedition HR AMSAT NEWS SERVICE BULLETIN 316.02 FROM AMSAT HQ SILVER SPRING, MD. NOVEMBER 12, 1994 TO ALL RADIO AMATEURS BT BID: $ANS-316.02 AMSAT Help Sought in Connection with Arctic Expedition Next March, a team of six will set off on a four month trek from Russia to Canada across the North Pole. The group will be under the leadership of Will Steger, a veteran polar explorer. Others include a Russian, an American woman, a British citizen, a Dane and a Japanese woman. The group will use a combination of dogsleds and specially designed canoe-sleds to negotiate the snow covered ice and open water that will be present as the ice breaks up later in the season. If successful, they will be the first to ever cross this expanse of the Arctic in a single season. Departing the Russian island of Severnaya Zemlya March 5th, the team hopes to observe Earth Day, April 22, at the North Pole and complete the last two thousand mile leg to Resolute by July. The purpose of the expedition is to study the environment of the Arctic, especially the effects pollution has had on it. They plan to keep in touch with school students in various parts of the world using a combination of the various store and forward Amateur Radio satellites and the Internet. To support this ambitious undertaking, called the International Arctic Project, or IAP; AMSAT is looking for volunteers willing to work with the expedition planners and help them set up and check out the necessary communications gear. An immediate need, is someone in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area familiar with working the digital satellites, who can instruct a few IAP people in the use these birds. Those willing to help should send a message to Keith Pugh W5IU at w5iu@amsat.org /EX SB SAT @ AMSAT $ANS-316.03 FTP Teleport HR AMSAT NEWS SERVICE BULLETIN 316.03 FROM AMSAT HQ SILVER SPRING, MD.
