The planned launch date has been tenatively set for Feb '96. It appears that this new JAS-2 will have the same frequencies as FO-20 currently uses. However, there will be a 9600 baud capability FSK (G3RUH type) uplink available on 145.870 MHz but it will not use the current PACSAT protocol that is currently used on AO-16 and the UoSats today. The BBS will work just like it currently does on FO-20. Please stay tuned to further AMSAT News Service (ANS) bulletins for more information about the JAS-2 launch. [The AMSAT News Service (ANS) would like to thank Kazu Sakamoto (JJ1WTK) for the information which went into this bulletin item.] /EX SB SAT @ AMSAT $ANS-139.03 WEEKLY OSCAR STATUS REPORTS HR AMSAT NEWS SERVICE BULLETIN 139.03 FROM AMSAT HQ SILVER SPRING, MD MAY 20, 1995 TO ALL RADIO AMATEURS BT BID: $ANS-139.02 Weekly OSCAR Status Reports: 20-MAY-95 AO-13: Current Transponder Operating Schedule: L QST *** AO-13 TRANSPONDER SCHEDULE *** 1995 May 22 - Jul 31 Mode-B : MA 0 to MA 70 | Omnis : MA 230 to MA 25 Mode-BS : MA 70 to MA 110 | Mode-S : MA 110 to MA 112 |<- S beacon only Mode-S : MA 112 to MA 135 |<- S transponder; B trsp. is OFF Mode-S : MA 135 to MA 140 |<- S beacon only Mode-BS : MA 140 to MA 180 | Alon/Alat 180/0 Mode-B : MA 180 to MA 256 | Move to attitude 225/0, Jul 31 Note: The Mode-B beacon is ON during the Mode-S transponder operations only. [G3RUH/DB2OS/VK5AGR] MIR: KC4YER reports an excellent contact with Dr. Norm Thagard R0MIR aboard the Russian space station Mir. Norm reported that he had a little trouble in the beginning with interference from ground stations trying to transmit packets to Mir's TNC. Please remember to first listen to Mir's downlink before trying to transmit to determine if Mir is in packet or voice mode. KC4YER's contact was with a 45 watt mobile rig with a mag mount whip antenna while driving home from the Kennedy Space Center on Mir's decending node. This approximate time would work out to roughly the end of Thagard's work day aboard Mir. As things currently stand Atlantis is scheduled for launch no earlier than June 22nd on the STS-71 mission which will return Thagard and his two cosmonaut companions to the Earth. The next Americans aboard Mir after STS-71 will be Ken Cameron KB5AWP and the STS-74 crew, currently scheduled for October. The next American scheduled to serve a long duration period aboard Mir will be Dr. Shannon Lucid in 1996. On further news Jay Apt (N5QWL) reports that the when he spoke to Norm Thagard on 18-MAY-95 that the packet TNC had been turned off to con- serve electric power. Do not expect to see the TNC return until after a space walk on 22-MAY-95 to move a solar array to a new location and it is producing power. [KC4YER & N5QWL] WO-18: WO-18 is in MBL. Cause of the crash is unknown for now. Weber State University Ground Controllers will be uploading operations code over the next week and resuming activity. The spacecraft transmitter has been turned on and pre-crash telemetry does not show any problems. Ground Controllers will post any diagnostic findings.
