SB SAT @ AMSAT $ANS-337.01 PY2BJO REPRESENTS BRAZILIAN HAMS HR AMSAT NEWS SERVICE BULLETIN 337.01 FROM AMSAT HQ SILVER SPRING, MD DECEMBER 3, 1994 TO ALL RADIO AMATEURS BT BID: $ANS-337.01 PY2BJO Is Elected President Of The Brazilian Amateur Radio League Junior Torres de Castro (PY2BJO), the creator and owner of the DOVE (DO-17) satellite, and also a member of the AMSAT-NA Board of Directors, has been given the great honour of representing over 30,000 amateur radio operators as a result of being elected to the position of President of the Brazilian Amateur Radio League. One of the major tasks facing PY2BJO is representing the interests of the radio amateurs of Brazil in discussions with the Minister of Communications. These discussions will include, most importantly, frequency spectrum allocation. Because of pressure from commercial interests, PY2BJO reports that '95 will be a critical year for radio amateurs in Brazil. PY2BJO says that for him, being elected president of the the biggest amateur radio organization in Brazil is a dream come true. From his humble beginnings at age 12 in the world of amateur radio working in the Post Office, he has strived to be the best and to explore every aspect of this facinating hobby. His most notable contribution to amateur radio was the DOVE-OSCAR-17 satellite. His idea was for a small, lightweight satellite to help spark excitement about the space sciences in school age children around the world. Today, many thousands of school children and radio amateurs have heard DOVE speak and decoded its telemetry. Although DOVE has yet to achieve its full potential, the DOVE Recovery Team, consisting of WD0E, NK6K, N5AHD, is working diligently to make PY2BJO's dream reach fruition. In almost a half-century of being a radio amateur, PY2BJO's philosphy has been to approach amateur radio as a "researcher" to discover, for himself, all the intricate details of whatever aspect he was exploring. In his early years he studied antenna design with the goal of using his knowledge for EME work and radio astronomy. Later, he helped introduce packet radio in Brazil and worked tirelessly to make it legal for radio amateurs to use it and set up BBSs there. Now, he continues to look at Digital Signal Processing (DSP) for EME work. And his "research" still continues in many other areas. AMSAT-NA and radio amateurs around the world congratulate PY2BJO upon being elected President of the Brazilian Amateur Radio League. Bob expressed his desire to be a "back-up" ANS Editor to WD0HHU many months ago and as a result of his hard work, the ANS bulletins came out without a problem. WD0HHU's travels took him to Bolivia to to see a spectacular view of the 3-NOV-94 solar eclipse in Potosi, Bolivia and also to view many Inca indian ruins around La Paz, Bolivia and Machupicchu, Peru. Other countries on WD0HHU's itinerary included Argentina and Brazil. In Buenos Aires, the AMSAT-LU members displayed their usual hospitality towards WD0HHU, acting as a tour guides around their beautiful city. In Sao Paulo, Brazil, WD0HHU spent a week at the QTH of PY2BJO "recovering" from his arduous 20 city, "world-wind" tour of South America. WD0HHU says that "spending a week at Junior's house and playing with all his ham radio equipment and computers was a vacation in itself!"
