Satgen 15 by GM4IHJ 12 July 89 Useful Ku Band 10.9 to 12.5 GHz TV Geosats covering Western Europe. Several questions have come in recently, about using Astra equipment to look at other TV sats. It is not simple . Some Astra gear only tunes 11.2 to 11.45 GHz. Most Astra systems use fixed aerial dishes, which are difficult to reorientate accurately on other sats. Worse still, all the other available TV Geosats except TDF 1 and Tele X, have much weaker signals than Astra. That said , if you are prepared to try, the following produce usable signals in Scotland, on a 1.8m dish to a 1.3dB LNB. Station locations and frequencies can and often do change. The Gorizont has been more off than on lately. So if your Astra gear tunes 10.9 to 12.5 GHz , there are more than 48 different TV channels you can resolve with a dish of 1.8 metres or bigger. If your dish is only 60/80 cms , forget all except TDF 1, Tele X and Astra Eutelsats need about 1.2 m dish. There are other geosats nearer the horizon, ie PanAm sat , but they are not easy to get, unless you go to considerable expense and trouble, including a big dish, firmly mounted with full polar axis remote control of pointing. This is the so called Polar/Equatorial mount where the dish rotates about a single axis aligned on the Pole star, giving coverage of the geostationary arc with only one axis of movement.CNN 27.5W is best none Astra channel. This writer prefers a dish mounted with movement in Az and El axes for geosat studies.
