AMSAT at Dayton Hamvention 2002

The following information is for those who plan to attend Hamvention 2002 in Dayton, OH on 17 through 19 May 2002. Information concerning Hamvention 2002 can be found at, including housing and schedules of events.

Thursday -- 16 May 2002

AMSAT Booth setup at Hara Arena will begin at 8:30 AM. Meet in the lobby of the Hope Hotel. This event is only for those who have volunteered to help with the AMSAT booth. Admission to Hara Arena is tightly controlled and proper identification is required. Contact point is Barry Baines, if you wish to volunteer for setup or booth duty during Hamvention.

Hamvention tickets are available all day at the Hara Arena box office.

Thursday Evening -- 16 May 2002

For those who arrive in the Dayton area on Thursday there will be a pizza'n'suds get together at Marion's Pizza at 1320 N Fairfield Rd in Beavercreek. This is an informal event and a time to have eyeball QSO with all of your friends. If you plan to attend , please contact Ed Collins at and let me know how many people will be in your group.

This event is open to AMSAT members and hams interested in amateur radio satellite operations. Plan to attend and unwind in an informal environment prior to the start of Hamvention. Order from the menu and drinks (soft drinks, beer, wine and iced tea) are available. There will be signs to the AMSAT PIZZA PARTY in the restaurant. The party will begin at 6:30 PM and go until ?


From the downtown Dayton area follow US Route 35 East toward Xenia. Turn left at N. Fairfield Rd and go about 0.4 mile and turn right at the traffic light. Marion's will be on the left hand side as you enter the shopping center.

For all of you GPS and APRS users the Marion's Pizza is located at N 39 deg 43 min 35.6 sec and W 084 deg 03 min 21.8 sec. APRS users should look for N8NUY-10 as a beacon.

From the Hope Hotel leave the WPAFB gate and turn right onto Ohio Rt 444. Follow Ohio Rt 444 west 0.4 miles and turn right on the entrance ramp to Ohio Rt 844. Look for the signs for I-675. Head south two exits, approximately 1.4 miles and look for the exit to Col Glenn Highway. Turn right at the bottom of the ramp and get in the left hand lane. Turn left at the next light (on the right hand side is the Nutter Center) on N Fairfield Rd and head south 3.7 miles.When you cross Old Route 35 you will see a shopping center on the left hand side. At the intersection of N. Fairfield Rd and Old St Rt. 35, there is a Sunoco gas station on your left and a Friendlies Ice Cream store across the street. Marion's is directly behind the Friendlies store. Go through the intersection and turn left into the shopping center at the next traffic light. Marion's Pizza is on the left and slightly up hill as you make the turn.

Friday through Sunday 17 May through 19 May 2002

The Hamvention is open and the AMSAT booth will be manned by those who have volunteered. On Friday, maps to the AMSAT Banquet will be available at the booth. Until about 2:30 PM any open dinner spaces can be reserved at the AMSAT booth. The Hamvention closes at 5:00 PM on Friday and Saturday. On Sunday the booth closes at about 1:00 PM.

Friday Evening

On Friday Evening at 6:30 PM will be the start of the Happy Hour for the AMSAT Banquet. The Annual Banquet will be held at Eleanor's Amber Rose, 1400 Valley St in old North Dayton. Dinner will be served at 7:30 PM.

Following the dinner will be a presentation by Bob Bruninga, WB4APR on APRS and the US Naval Academy PCSat satellite.

For all of you GPS users and APRS fans the following are the coordinates of Eleanor's Amber Rose Restaurant: N 39 deg 46 min 54.8 sec and W 084 deg 09 min 29.4 sec.

Look for the N8NUY-10 beacon at the restaurant! Talk in will be on 145.410 - 100 Hz PL required.

Reservations are required. Contact Nancy Makley, or Dave Misek, to make your reservations. Confirmations will be sent via e-mail.

Plan to attend. This is the best dinner in town during Hamvention!


The AMSAT Forum will be held in Room 1 beginning at 8:15 AM. This is always a well-attended event and this year will be no exception. Last year there was standing room only, so arrive early when the Hara Arena doors open to the general public at 8:00 AM.

The remainder of Saturday and Sunday are open to visit the many Hamvention booths and outside vendors. Hamvention inside booths close at 1:00 PM on Sunday and there is a drawing for unclaimed prizes and the grand prizes in the main arena at Hara on Sunday afternoon.

And as always, AMSAT members can contact each other on the 145.410 - offset 100 Hz PL tone repeater, N8GTE. The 442.375 + offset repeater (N8GTE) is also available for AMSAT use.
