STS-121 Mission Specialists Piers Sellers and Mike Fossum are conducting
their second spacewalk during Space Shuttle Discovery’s stay at the
International Space Station. The excursion, which is scheduled to last
6.5 hours, began at 8:14 a.m. EDT. This spacewalk has two major
objectives. One task is the installation of a spare thermal control
system pump on to the outside of the Quest Airlock.
The second is the replacement of reel assembly for a cable that provides
power and data to the station’s mobile transporter. The completion of
this job will enable the mobile transporter to move along the integrated
truss structure and to be used for future station assembly tasks.
Pilot Mark Kelly is coordinating spacewalk activities and Commander
Steve Lindsey is monitoring vehicle systems and video setups. Mission
Specialists Stephanie Wilson and Lisa Nowak are the robotic arm operators.
In other activities, the Expedition 13 crew is loading the Leonardo
multi-purpose logistics module with scientific experiment results,
unneeded items and trash from the station. Leonardo will return to
Discovery’s payload bay Friday in preparation for the return to Earth.
