Expedition 11 Shifts into Gear
Expedition 11 Commander Sergei Krikalev exercises on a cycle ergometer
aboard the Space Station At the close of their third week in space, the
crewmembers of the International Space Station are quickly becoming
accustomed to their new orbiting home, as they tackle a variety of
maintenance tasks and scientific experiments.
Expedition 11 Commander Sergei Krikalev spent some time working on the
malfunctioning Elektron oxygen-generating system on Thursday, but it
failed almost immediately, prompting additional troubleshooting on
Friday. In the meantime, oxygen is being supplied as needed from tanks
in the Progress cargo ship, one of several oxygen supplies available.
On Friday, Flight Engineer and NASA ISS Science Officer John Phillips
performed some maintenance on a treadmill that had stopped working.
While engineers on the ground analyze the data downlinked by Phillips
and track down the problem, the crew will use resistive exercise
equipment and the stationary bike to fulfill the 2 1/2 hour daily
regimen of required exercise.
Earlier in the week, the crew participated in an ongoing scientific
study aimed at reducing the formation of kidney stones. The crew also
attended to other routine maintenance tasks and packed items to be
returned to Earth on the Space Shuttle Discovery.
