CALIFORNIA STUDENTS WILL CALL INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION CREW

California students will strike gold next week, when they make a long-distance phone call to Commander Leroy Chiao and Flight Engineer Salizhan Sharipov of the International Space Station Expedition 10 crew. The event includes a video link with the crew.

The call is Tuesday, March 15 from 1:05 to 1:25 p.m. EST. Approximately 500 students from Saint Mark's School and Davidson Middle School, San Rafael, Calif., will chat with the crew. They will learn about the vital role the Station plays in the Vision for Space Exploration and how technological advances from NASA research have enhanced quality of life on Earth.

This activity is part of NASA's Teaching from Space Program. It supports NASA's efforts to encourage students to study and possibly pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The Vision for U.S. Space Exploration is a bold new course into the cosmos. It is a journey that will return the Space Shuttle safely to flight, complete the construction of the Space Station, take humans back to the moon and eventually to Mars and beyond.

The downlink airs live on the Web and on NASA TV, available in the continental U.S. on AMC-6, Transponder 9C, C-Band, at 72 degrees west longitude. The frequency is 3880.0 MHz.
