* Expedition 10 Continues Maintenance Aboard the ISS*
After enjoying a three-day holiday weekend aboard the International
Space Station, Expedition 10 Commander Leroy Chiao and Flight Engineer
Salizhan Sharipov tackled a busy schedule Tuesday.
They conducted maintenance efforts on the Russian Elektron
oxygen-generation system. They tried to troubleshoot gas bubbles in the
plumbing of the system, which shut down Saturday morning. Tuesday’s
efforts were not successful due to an equipment problem. Russian ground
controllers are assessing the situation. Also, controllers used the
oxygen from the ISS Progress 16 spacecraft to repressurize the Station’s
atmosphere.
On the science front, the Expedition 10 crewmembers conducted a session
with a European biomedical experiment that is studying the effects on
space travel on the perception and process of memorizing orientation and
location in a virtual reality environment.
Chiao and Sharipov recorded their body mass and calf measurements for a
Russian biomedical assessment studying changes in the human body during
spaceflight.
In other activities, Chiao and Sharipov continued to unload cargo from
the ISS Progress 16 cargo craft and performed their daily exercise regimen.
