ARISS Notice -- European Space Operations Centre, Darmstadt



ASTRONAUT MIKE FINCKE WILL CALL HAM STATION AT ESOC, SATURDAY SEPTEMBER
18, 2004

Saturday, September 18 2004, the European Space Operations Centre
(ESOC) in Darmstadt is setting up "The long night of the stars", a big
event in which 160 institutions and organisations in Germany,
Switzerland and Austria will participate and which is expected to draw
tens of thousands of visitors.

At Darmstadt on that day, the Operations Centre is going to be open for
visitors, there will be public lectures and telescopes to view the
night sky, as well as guided tours of the facilities, explaining the
ESA spacecraft missions. They expect 3000 visitors. Public interest is
very large, but they can only let 3000 people onto the premises for
security reasons.

In the evening, NASA astronaut Mike Fincke, KE5AIT onboard the
International Space Station will perform an ARISS QSO with DL0ESA, the
ESOC amateur radio club station. The radio contact will be relayed by
the ESOC PR service for the benefit of the audience and the media.

The QSO is scheduled to start at 1854 UTC, which is 20:54 local time
(CET).

Ham stations in Europe are invited to listen on the downlink frequency
145.800 MHz FM.

participation of amateur radio societies in the USA, Canada, Europe,
Russia and Japan.

ARISS offers an opportunity for students to experience the excitement
of Amateur Radio by talking directly with crewmembers on-board the
International Space Station. Teachers, parents and communities
experience, first hand, how Amateur Radio and crewmembers on ISS can
energize youngsters' interest in science, technology, and learning.
