The Expedition 9 crewmembers aboard the International Space Station
received good news before a holiday weekend, when Mission Control
informed them that a vital piece of Station equipment was brought back
on line. Control Moment Gyroscope 2 (CMG 2) was fully operational Friday
morning, two days after a spacewalk restored its power supply.
"That's great," NASA ISS Science Officer Mike Fincke replied to Mission
Control when hearing the news. "Congratulations to you guys on the
ground -- you guys put in so many hours to make this spacewalk possible."
Expedition 9 Commander Gennady Padalka and Fincke replaced a failed
circuit breaker during a 5-hour, 40-minute spacewalk Wednesday. The
gyroscope now joins two others in controlling the Station's orientation
during normal operations.
On Friday, the crewmembers performed clean-up tasks, including hanging
the Russian Orlan-M spacesuits out to dry, stowing tools and conducting
a follow-up conference with spacewalk specialists. Saturday their sleep
shift schedule reverts to normal as they start a three-day weekend to
observe the U.S. Independence Day holiday Monday.
