Biomedical Experiments Continue; Crew to Troubleshoot Elektron
Aboard the International Space Station, Expedition 8 Commander Michael
Foale and Flight Engineer Alexander Kaleri continued their work
Wednesday with biomedical experiments. One experiment was the third part
of a Russian medical assessment that the crewmembers have been
conducting since Monday. The studies monitor crew health and give
valuable information about living in microgravity.
In other activities Wednesday, Foale took monthly water samples and
completed mandatory crew medical officer training. Kaleri installed new
software in a laptop computer in the Zvezda Service Module.
The Russian Elektron oxygen generation system remains offline. It is
believed that air bubbles caused by contaminated water are causing the
Elektron to shut down after a few minutes of operation.
Foale and Kaleri are scheduled to troubleshoot the problem over the next
two days. They will replace a liquids unit Thursday in the Elektron
oxygen generation system. Friday, the crewmembers will replace water
feed lines.
