Shuttle fleet set for changes
Houston Chronicle Article

The Columbia Accident Investigation Board has told NASA to make the
following changes as it prepares its shuttle fleet to return to flight:

. Make better use of X-ray technologies to inspect the wing carbon
panels for damage between missions.

. Develop a formal agreement with the National Imagery and Mapping
Agency for routine imagery of the shuttle in flight using spy satellites
and powerful military telescopes.

. Develop in-flight inspection and repair capability.

. Ensure at least three sharply focused ground-based tracking cameras
could follow the shuttle through at least the first two minutes of
flight. Also, enlist the use of tracking equipment on ships and aircraft
to assist.

. Equip shuttles with cameras to provide ground-based experts with live
images of the jettisoned fuel tank and the wings' leading edges.
