Check out the excellent STS-107 FAQ put together by the folks on
sci.space.shuttle. This topic is addressed under "Didn't STS-87
have a tile impact problem?" The FAQ also addresses many other
common questions, such as "Why didn't they do a spacewalk to
inspect the underside?"
