It was indeed in Reader's Digest. The original article is on the site,
and I remember reading the article when it was published. I'm not in a
position to evaluate the claims, and I've never seen any of the
evidence directly. But I *do* know that the article led to my first
awareness of amateur radio space operations, *before* I knew about any
OSCARs. The story of Torre Bert captured at least one young kid's
imagination in those days.
