ISS UI messages...

ISS UI Messaging:

I see that Steve Dimse, K4HG has now added a message column to the
http://www.ariss.net web page so that you can see some more of the UI
packets that are being exchanged via ISS.. Such messages in the
proper message format will be captured by others with the APRS HT's
or Mobiles on the downlink (and also there on the ARISS page).

The format for an APRS message is shown below. Just type this in the
data portion of your packet:

:ABCXYZ-14:message goes here..............

Where you begin with a colon, then a 9 byte callsign (padded with spaces)
to whom you are sending the message and then another colon in the 11th
position and then the message.

The only problem is that eveyone with a Kenwood APRS HT or mobile will
not get this packet except for WA8XYZ. A better way to communicate with
other ISS groupies on your pass, is to send a bulletin. Bulletins are
captured by everyone. In this case, use the format:

:BLN#ISS :bulletin text goes here...............

This packet will be captured by ALL aprs stations, including the handhelds
and mobiles (and any IGates that are monitoring the downlinnk and feeding
to http://www.ariss.net). Use a different # for each bulletin so that
they do not overwrite each other on receipt. (0-9)

Or, if you REALLY WANT to have fun, send an APRS message in this format:

:EMAIL :wb4apr@arrl.org - Hi via Ham radio and the ISS, etc...

This APRS message (if received by any Igate, anywhere) will be captured by
the APRS system, converted to an Email and Emailed to the Email address
in the message. Note, a valid Email address must be the first WORD of the
message... and all the message must fit on one line...

Thanks Steve for this window on the world!
