Mir / Shuttle status 2/15/2000

New Mir crew launch date set.

The Shuttle is up:
And there is plenty to see and read on the web.  The school EarthCam
project is very interesting.  
My daughter and I were invited to one of the schools to view the
students at work with the EarthCam project.  
The EarthCam project allows students to control a digital camera on
board the Shuttle.  
Students can actually program the camera to take a specific picture of
the earth at a specific 
time and place.  Then a few hours later, the images show up on the web. 
My daughter Jennifer 
had fun setting up the program to tell the shuttle to take a picture of
the Tigress & Euphrates 
rivers in Iraq.  It was a great learning experience.

Orbital Tracking Test:
Do you think your tracking program is incorrect?
Set you tracking program to track a stable object such as the ISS
modules.  Then check the 
NASA web page to see how close your program is to the position on the
NASA web page.  
If your tracking error is less than 10 degrees, you are in the ball part
(network delays).  
Also look at where sun is located in the web and compare it to your
tracking program.  
The positions should be very close.  If the sun is in a different time
zone, then your 
clock on your PC is not set to match the tracking program.  The Shuttle
should not be 
used as a tracking program calibration tool because they fire their
engines almost every hour.

New crew Mir still scheduled for launch March 31.

Mir / ISS SSTV Tips:
In a few months the Mir Space Station may be activating the amateur
radio projects, including the MAREX-NA SSTV project.  
The International Space Station (Alpha) may also be installing a new
SSTV system as early as Q4 2000.  
Now is the time to start getting your satellite station  ready to
transmit and receive Slow Scan Television signals.

I have provided a few web links, which can help you, get your satellite
station ready to receive SSTV images.
