Mir,SSTV Status Dec 9, 1998

Mir Amateur Radio Status: Dec 9, 1998

by Miles Mann WF1F,
MAREX-NA (Manned Amateur Radio Experiment, North American Division)

PMS is off Line (Temporarily)
The Mir crew has received the information needed to reset the PMS. The
Sysops will be working
with the crew to verify the PMS parameter configuration. PMS access may be
limited while
we are re-cabling all of the ham gear to support simultaneous PMS (2-meter
145.985) and SSTV (70cm 437.975) access.

SSTV Status: (Hardware installed)
The Energia engineering team has instructed the Mir crew on the
installation of the SSTV system. MAREX-NA sent the crew the cable
installation instructions via packet a few weeks ago. The cable
installation is complex and has been completed. The existing PMS system
needs to be
moved from the PRIRODA module to the Mir-Core module. Both the SSTV and
the PMS will
be sharing the same antenna. MAREX-NA has delivered all of the required
cables, filter etc.
to complete the connections. It is very important that all of the
connections are made correctly.
It is possible there may be additional PMS down time next week while the
SSTV is being installed.

Update December 8 ,1998

I had a conversation with Cosmonaut Gennady on board Mir today and we
began debugging the SSTV system.
The crew has connected the MAREX-NA SSTV System and powered on the system.
We are in the process of
verifying all of the cable connections.
I invite everyone to listen to 437.975 FM for the down linking of SSTV
images. The system is currently
configured for Receive ONLY at this time. As soon as we have verified all
of the cables and performed
some ON-AIR testing, we will announce the official beginning of the
downlinking of images.

If you hear the Mir crew calling the Sysops on voice (WF1F or N6CO) Please
stop and listen.
Let the Mir crew contact the Sysops.
We hope to have the down link operational by next week (Crew work load
permitting).
