Maybe those with more knowledge of orbital parameters than I can answer
this.

If it were launched by hand 90 degrees perpindicular to the orbit of MIR
it would go out some distance (a couple of km maybe) and then cross the
orbit of MIR at two points at each revolution. What the old Gemeni
astronauts called a whifferdill. On the other hand if it were launched
retrograde it would preceed Mir by a slightly increasing distance  and
vice-versa.

I'm betting that they threw it in a plane changing configuration ... and
that the keps for the MIR are very accurate for RS-18
