MIREX UPDATE 10 MAY 1998

                            M I R E X - U P D A T E

10 May 1998

ANDY THOMAS OVER TEXAS

Andy Thomas was last heard from this station on Saturday 10 May.
This was at 1849 Zulu and he was talking to station W5RRR.
In Andy's QSO, there was a breaking station wishing to talk with Andy.
He politely told the station he was in contact with W5RRR.
---------------

R0MIR-1 [Personal Bulletin Board System]

All operations on R0MIR-1 are normal.
The PBBS is running a Kantronics KPC-9612+ V.8.1 TNC.
These commands a similar to most PBBS and BBS systems.
There have been over 3000 messages sent through the new PBBS so far and
it looks as if many will follow.

Please don't ask for QSL info from MIR Crew. QSL information is below.
---------------

LESS THAN ONE MONTH LEFT FOR ANDY

Andy Thomas has been up on MIR since January.
All good things come to an end, and early in June Andy will arrive home
again!
Therefore, there is little time to talk to the "last" American onboard
the Space Station MIR. It is hopeful that on the new ISS to be up within
the next few years and Amateur Radio will be aboard!

ISS will have 1200 baud packet, along with voice on a 2 meter split.
With a doppler of only + - 3 KC [ MAX ] this should pose no problem
for the average dual band radio most hams use.
--------------

REQUEST FROM ANDY THOMAS

MIREX has been informed that Andy Thomas requests that stations don't
send packets while he is on voice. It is suggested that you monitor
the audio on frequency (145.985) on the passes to see if you hear
anything before you try connection to MIR's PBBS, R0MIR-1. If you can't
monitor the packets on an external speaker, try looking at your S-meter
to see if there is a steady signal in opposed to short packets.
If in doubt, listen first.
---------------

REMINDER...

MIR's PBBS (Personal Bulletin Board System) is just that - PERSONAL.
The messages sent to R0MIR-1 are intended for the CREW.
You will notice that if you try sending a message to someone other than
R0MIR, you will see MESSAGES MUST BE ADDRESSED TO THIS STATION.
Please don't send (SB R0MIR) messages.
Out of common courtesy, please wait until users of R0MIR-1 disconnect
before you try to connect to R0MIR-1 mailbox, or try to digipeat
while others are connected to R0MIR-1.

QSL REQUESTS USA and WW except Europe:

Dr. Dave Larsen - N6CO/K6MIR
POB 1501
