MIREX UPDATE 05 MAY 1998

                            M I R E X - U P D A T E

APRS TEST RESULTS

It looks as if Murphy hit the APRS test again.
Hours before the test was to begin, MIR's TNC experienced an undeturmined
problem. The test then was then extended for an additional 3 days to end
on 30 April at 2300 Zulu. This extended time was only for school
participation. According to Bob Bruininga WB4APR, there were many
schools across the USA and Africa. For more information see
http://web.usna.navy.mil/~bruninga/mirex.html

Thanks to Bob, and all the other VOLUNTEERS that made this happen!

MIREX would like to thank all those stations that "QRXed" while this
school experiment was done.
---------------

FUTURE APRS SCHOOL TEST

There will be another School test in the very near future.
However, this will be a "school" test only, and will happen with very
little notice. This will also test the "readiness" of AMATEUR RADIO
OPERATORS.
---------------

REQUEST FROM ANDY THOMAS

MIREX has been informed that Andy Thomas requests that stations don't
send packets while he is on voice. It is suggested that you monitor
the audio on frequency (145.985) on the passes to see if you hear
anything before you try connection to MIR's PBBS, R0MIR-1. If you can't
monitor the packets on an external speaker, try looking at your S-meter
to see if there is a steady signal in opposed to short packets.
If in doubt, listen first.
---------------

REMINDER...

MIR's PBBS (Personal Bulletin Board System) is just that - PERSONAL.
The messages sent to R0MIR-1 are intended for the CREW.
You will notice that if you try sending a message to someone other than
R0MIR, you will see MESSAGES MUST BE ADDRESSED TO THIS STATION.
Please don't send (SB R0MIR) messages.
Out of common courtesy, please wait until users of R0MIR-1 disconnect
before you try to connect to R0MIR-1 mailbox, or try to digipeat
while others are connected to R0MIR-1.

---------------
MIREX EQUIPMENT TO LOAN

MIREX has been donated by Kenwood,ICOM,Kantronics and PacComm,
various pieces of equipment. This gear can be "loaned" to ANY school
that needs to particapate in a QSO to the MIR Space Station.
This equipment will be available once released from Miles Mann,
WF1F to MIREX.

Other west coast school stations that are interested in scheduling a
MIREX Voice School QSO with the MIR crew can send their requests to
WA6LIE.
It is encouraged that the participating schools can have a station ready
on 2 meters to make the contact.
---------------

FROM THE PRESIDENT

MIREX would like to Thank Bob [ WB4APR ] for his time in getting
the MIRMON progam ready for the MIREX School day. He spent
MANY hours on this.
MIREX would also like to thank John [KC4IYO ] and Sprint for use of
a toll free line the day of the test.

MIREX in the future is looking forward to having another General Test
of the MIRMON Program.

Also a BIG TNX for all the MIREX team who were scrambling the day of
the test when the TNC locked up to try and come up with a fix for this.

MIREX wanted to wait 24 hrs before "we" relased anything on this, as
"we" all know things can [ AND DID ] change - FOR the better - TNC
started to work!

Dr. Dave Larsen N6CO
