Mir Amateur Radio Status April 19, 1998
by Miles Mann WF1F, Mirex Director of Educational Resources
PMS:
The first 60 days of operation have been excellent. The new Kantronics
KPC-9612 Plus has been working
great. The PMS has been active for most of the last 60 days, with minimal
interruptions. There have
been a few scheduled shutdowns. When ever the crew is performing docking
maneuvers, the Amateur
Radio stations are always temporarily shutdown.
The Mir crews are getting 30-40 message a day from Amateur Radio station
around the world.
As your could probably imagine, the crews busy work schedule prevents them
from responding to every
message. But the crews does appreciate the interest and they do enjoy
reading the traffic.
We?ll, one of the crew members did have a few spare moments, and the
following people
have mail waiting.

A lot of stations have been asking the Mir crew about QSL information. The
crew is not keeping a log
of contacts. QSL card requests are on the honor system.
All requests for Mir QSL cards should be directed to Dave Larsen N6CO.
Please do not bother the crews about QSL information.

Please enclose a SASE for domestic or an IRC for International.
Crew Work Load:
The crew has been busy most of April with 5 space walks. And next month
there will be another cargo
truck to unload. Direct voice contacts have been rare due to there work
loads.

Check out the Proposed SSTV project.
Please check out the Mirex web pages for pending and proposed Mirex
projects.
MIREX has created an Internet Web page containing information regarding Mir
and the various Amateur Radio experiments proposed for the space station.
The pages are still "under construction", but some good information can be
gathered from what has been put together so far. URLs include the
following:
http://www.ik1sld.org/mirex.htm OR
http://www.ik1sld.org/mirex
http://www.geocities.com/~ik1sld/mirex.htm OR
http://www.geocities.com/~ik1sld/mirex
Some stations have had problems using the some of the URL aliases, if so,
try the long
version of the home page address
