But since the sound card has been shown to have a DC input
capability, it would seem that it could be used as an RS-232
serial port too.  Just a little bit-banger software...

The output might not have enough swing to drive other devices,
but the input should work.  That would be a great capability...
For backward compatibility with RS-232 devices out there...  A
good project for someone...
