An an interesting discussion of some of the measurements that go into "space weather" can be gleaned by looking at the Haystack Observatory website at http://www.haystack.edu/ and clicking on the "Atmospheric Sciences" button. Haystack is operated by MIT as the principal member of a consortium of New England universities.
You might find the astronomy and geodesy programs at Haystack to be interesting too.
