Why do satellites?

As an area coordinator for NM I recently gave a presentation here in
Albuquerque. I went over the standard: what is AMSAT, what are
satellites, what is the minimum and typical station for working the
current operational birds, and what satellites are in operation. It
went over well, but at the end I was approached by someone who asked,
"Why, why work satellites?" I was a bit taken back - why do I work
satellites?
I answered about my interests in the technical challenges of working
satellites (operation and station configuration), about getting to
know the regulars who seem to be on every pass (like Leo, W7JPI -
bless him), and the fun of working AO-51 as a quick exchange
satellite. I am curious if you folks have other reasons for working
satellites so I can share them with folks I talk to? What are your
reasons for working satellites?
