Good drivers allow you to set which COM port the driver attaches the USB
virtual device to. If you get an adapter that doesn't allow it, send it
back.
A large quantity of the USB to serial adapters are using the FTDI
chipsets. http://www.ftdichip.com/
They have royalty-free drivers on their website for use with their
chipsets for those who like to roll-their-own interfaces.
