I just try an USB to RS232 adaptor yesterday with a MFJ1278 TNC and a DOS terminal program MFJCOM 
and even if the program can be switched from com-1 to com-4 we where unable to make the PC see any 
port. I don't know if the device works better for Win XP based program?
