You can get by with less than full DC coupling.  After all, a DSP-2232 (and
probably other TNCs) has a series capacitor for both RX and TX data.  I am
guessing that works since with a high impedance termination, that can be
essentially a DC connection on an AC signal.  Probably a much better
approximation than an transformer will give.  Another point to factor in.
