RE: Re: [sarex] Bill completes "WAS from Space"

The "WAC from Space" award presented to Mike Fincke of Exp 9 was a special
award. The "from Space" is what identifies it as unique. The "WAS from
Space" will be treated the same way. A special award to applaud Bill
McArthur's efforts and support of amateur radio while in space.

Depends on how you look at it...

Einstein sees it as both situations:

1) Relative to the Earth he was probably outside the 50-mile area.

2) Relative to the ISS he was within the 50-mile area.

Relative to ARRL, I don't know what they would say, but I think he should
qualify for the award. I wish AMSAT would develop their own WAS and WAC
awards.

There's only one problem with a WAS that makes it somewhat difficult to
achieve from an orbital vehicle such as ISS.

Here's the link:
http://www.arrl.org/awards/was/

Requirement #3 reads: Contacts must be made from the same location, or from
locations no two of which are more than 50 miles apart which is affirmed by
signature of the applicant on the application. Club station applicants,
please include clearly the club name and callsign of the club station (or
trustee).

Can Bill prove he made all his contacts from the same point in orbit?
:)

As an ARRL member, I would vote to waive this requirement for ISS crew
members.

It would be neat if Amsat awards could make a special WAS certificate for
him. Sort of a thank you for his activity that he can show off to other

Astronaut-cosmonaut amateurs.
