For testing COM ports - I use Portmon - 
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Portmon.html . This is all you need - 
it's excellent.

Note to FT-847 owners: while tracking is on (Track button, not SAT) the **** 
radio can take forever to respond to a 'Get Frequency' request while you are 
spinning the dial - it waits until the frequency is stable before returning. 
If you don't take care with your software you'll get out of sync with the 
replies and end up with crazy frequencies.

My only solution - and I should have done this earlier - is to read the 
number of unread RX bytes on the serial connection before sending a command. 
If there are any unread bytes then these must be purged or discarded before 
the new command is sent.

Anyone needing some C++ code scraps for reading outstanding RX byte count 
mail me direct.
