Hi John,

Yes, you certainly can have a real time QSO through a data satellite. 
Many such QSOs are made through the ISS digipeater whenever it is 
operating.The same is true of PCSAT.

If you live in this part of the world (ZL), you can QSO for the entire 
10 minute pass, as there  are often only 2 or 3 stations active. These 
QSOs are similar to  PSK31, RTTY, or other keyboard QSOs.
