Mike, KC9DOA asked about AO-51's S-Band antenna.
The S-band antenna is linear. The L & S antennas are a single unit,
designed by Stan Wood, WA4NFY. If you want to see what the dual-band
structure looks like, fetch www.columbiaara.org/AMSAT-CARA-04-08.ppt
<http://www.columbiaara.org/AMSAT-CARA-04-08.ppt> and look at Slide #9.
Regarding antenna gain, at the Dayton Hamvention, Walt, K0CEH was
getting good copy with a 1/4 wave "whip" (i.e. a paper clip) as seen in
http://www.pbase.com/tomcat/image/43947504. Drew did very well with a
simple corner reflector in http://www.pbase.com/tomcat/image/43947506.
