Hal,
I use a vertical 5/8 wave on 2M and it works just fine on low angle passes. 
You need to look at the output meter, and when talking in a normal voice see 
about 1/3 or less than the full power output you see on a loud whisle into 
the mike. If you adjust your mike gain accordingly you should not be 
distorted.
Other causes could be RF on the coax, or an RF sensitive power supply. You 
might want to try a battery on one pass and see if it makes a difference.
