Daniel -- you might want to take a look at the MIT Haystack
Observatory's Student Radio Telescope (SRT) pages at
http://web.haystack.mit.edu/SRT/index.html. The ALFA/SPID is one of two
options they recommend for the project. You might also find their users
forum (http://web.haystack.mit.edu/SRT/forums/) to be of some use in
finding others who can help.
To use the mount as a telescope, Alan Rogers has designed a new rotor
controller using a Basic Stamp BS2 and National LMD18200 "H-Bridge"
motor controllers (see
http://web.haystack.mit.edu/SRT/pics/schemgndctl.pdf).
In addition to the Alfa/Spid, a nice heavy duty az/el mount is also
available from CASSI (http://www.cassicorp.com/)
73, Tom
