Hi Ray,
The FT-290R II on ssb is a single conversion radio with an IF of
13.985MHz.
The FT790R has an IF at 10.7MHz, but I haven't been able to locate the
specification
for the mk II that you own. If you have a general coverage HF receiver,
you could
listen for the IF at 10.7 and 14 MHz.
