Actually, Bell 202 modems were available in the mid-1960s so
it was nearly 20 years before being adopted for ham radio use.
Similarly, packet networks existed in the late 1960s so this wasn't
really new either. What was special about the TNC-2 was that it was
cheap and simple enough for hams to use.
