Tony has a wonderful idea! How much would it hurt the big guns to sit on
standby once in great while to give the newbies and QRPer's a chance? Pick
a day that everyone could coordinate around. This way the little guys get a
chance and we could see just how good this gem of a bird is. :-)

Greg

I couldn't agree with you more -- I can see my packets bounce back from the
International Space Station on 2 meters with a Kenwood D7 ( built-in TNC )
and a rubber duck! Yet the chaos is difficult to get through on AO-51 with
100watts and high-gain antennas!

In my opinion, it would be a good idea to have a "weak signal day" for
portables and QRP stations. It wouldn't exclude any stations from using the
satellite, it would only suggest that others make an effort to yield to
portables and HT users under a gentelmen's agreement.

What do you think?

PS: If I'm one of those that stepped on you, I apologize.

I agree. Anyone new to working the FM birds should read the tips that Emily

23:30utc 08/13/04 on AO-27 east pass el 45' worked 6 contacts using HT and
my home brew arrow antenna. AO-27 is the best FM satellite ever, even better
than AO-51 just because it is so easy to get into even when it is loaded
with all the regulars (nothing wrong with being a regular). When working the
FM birds it is all about timing, even more so when working it portable.
SO-50 is very easy to work as well. But I do have a harder time working
AO-51 portable just because its harder to get into because of the pl tone
crashes. But it is very easy to copy even with a HT and a arrow antenna. I
have been working more portable operations on the FM satellites here lately
just to help promote the use of low power and to show that it can be done on
a regular bases.

Anyone who is or thinking about working the FM birds portable should read
the great tip by Emily W0EEC which can be found on the AMSAT web site. 73

I think its really great that you can get to everyone and anyone on the
satellite on every pass that touchs the states.

You are correct with the 5 contacts, and I want to thank you for helping me
start out and the feedback you have given. As for the other 5 times, I am
finding out that my reception is in need of a little work, and apologies for
that. Pretty sure I need crossed yagis to stop the fading. I don't always
hear myself on the bird, so I don't call again if I don't hear myself for
now on. I appreciate the contacts, but the only contacts I have as of today
is those with you and a couple other western contacts, and one I made last
night at midnight with KL7QZ in BP-51. What I have in mind with the bird is
to make one new grid square when I can, and maybe work the fifty states.
The same as what you have already achieved.

If you look at you're logs, you will see that you make at least 6 if not
more contacts per pass. I'm lucky to get one, and 50% of the time, it will
be you. (That isn't meant to sound bad, I'm grateful for the contact.)

You shouldn't be angry about what I have put forth. You are on before I get
reception and still on after I loss reception. You have very much to be
proud of. As you're logs show, you have a great satellite rig setup, and us
newbie's could learn much from you.

All that I am suggesting, is to try just calling out you're call sign once,
and wait for replies. If a contact like say someone in Kentucky calls, by
all means, snag the grid square, and then stand by on the rest of that pass.
There far too many of us that want that square that are getting squashed by
the ones with really good rigs, grabbing the next grid square right after
previous one on the same pass.

Is one contact a pass really that bad? If you made only one contact on a
pass instead of the 6 or 8 that you're setup will allow, how many more of us
a lesser rig could also have one contact a pass, and not the usual zip?
Doesn't this sound fair?

Looking forward in my inbox, I already see that I'm in for a spanking from
the rest of the big guns, so I'm going to leave it at this, and dig through
all the rest of the email. I will reply to all of them, I always take my
medicine. From the positive replies I've read, there are really some very
good ideas and I will try to compile these.

I've already forwarded an email with a sugestion about HT's and QRP's.

I'm not trying to be a cop, just trying to help by throwing my 2 cents out

and can see that a little thought for you're fellow amateur can go such a
long way, that I get a little bit excited at time about Echo.

We have had radio police since the time of Marconi and I see they are alive
and well on Satellite too! There are approximatly 700,000 Radio Amateurs in
the US. Less that half are active, and less than 10 % of those who are
active, work Satellites. With a US population of 250,000,000 how can we
afford to spend time pointing fingers at each other ? In a few months
everyone that tries will have worked AO-51. Lets be patient.

Subject: [amsat-bb] Weak Signal Day?

All

In light of AO-51's popularity, here's a suggestion. Why not have one day a
week set aside for those using portable and QRP satellite equipment? It
wouldn't exclude any stations from using the satellite on that day, it would
only suggest that others make an effort to "yield" to those using QRP and
portables.

It would give those who have limited power and equipment a better chance at
the satellite -- not to mention a regular oportunity to demonstrate theirs
and Echo's ability to work well with weak signals.

Who knows? It may even spill over to a smallest portable / QRP station
ZRO-like test on all birds.

Just a suggestion...

I sure hate to say it....but "I told you so" comes to mind. It has been like
this since the first FM bird and will still be long after AO-51 has burnt up.
Asking for someone to stop using the satellite so someone else can is just not
going to happen. I would think you have a better chance of getting a HF
pileup to stop.

I have got to stop spending all these 2 cent comments. It is getting
