I think you've hit the nail of the head. I don't think we'll ever get any 
luck getting a free ride, or get funding for that matter, by simply placing 
a transponder in orbit. I've always thought that we should consider 
something SETI related because it would widen the pool of funding 
resources. Even if we managed to get donations from 1% of every person who 
ran Seti@home, we could do quite a bit....
