RE: Help needed for ISS contact...

There are generally four kinds of APRS packets:

1. Position
2. Status
3. Message
4. Other (special purpose - maybe telemetry for a balloon?)

The format of these packets will look slightly different. These packets may
also be compressed which further makes them look different from others.

The first packet you have listed looks like a compressed position packet
using a grid square of 'EM55CC' instead of a lat/long. It also probably had
a path of "RELAY,WIDE" and RS0ISS-3 relayed it. The compressed tag at the
end makes it look like it may have been from a TH-D7 or TH-D700 (just a
guess).

The second packet you have listed is an uncompressed position packet with a
lat/long position.

You said what you saw on your terminal screen was different than what showed
up on ariss.net. Can you copy both and show them here so we can do a side
by side comparision? Or did you mean that your packet looked different from
others on ariss.net?

I don't use WinAPRS so I can't give you exact steps on how to change
settings. I highly recommend using UISS because it was written for working
the ISS digipeater. It works fine with AGWPE and a sound card. Here is the

I have WinAPRS 2.7.2 installed on my computer using AGWPE as well for
the sound card packet interface. There is no TNC connected to my
system. I've been trying to digipeat through ISS when it passes
overhead (I think I may have done that), but my transmitted information
looks all wrong compared to what I saw on screen.

This is what I copied off the web site (http://www.ariss.net/index.cgi?
absolute=1):

N4XCB]EM55CC,RS0ISS-3*,WIDE,qAS,KB2RC-10:]$[

One packet that I copied off the web site looks like this:

KC9DOA]CQ,RS0ISS-3*,SGATE,WIDE,qAo,N0AN:!4345.65N/08826.18W-Mike - Fond
du Lac, WI USA EN53ss

Other packets are different than mine, so obviously I'm doing something
wrong here. I don't even see my lat. / long. coordinates in the packet.

(1) How do I get my transmitted packet to look like everyone elses in
WinAPRS 2.7.2???

(2) How do I add a greeting message???

(3) Do I need to use the "space mode" or "normal"??

I'm very new to this, I just can't find anything on the web on how to
set up WinAPRS for this. Thanks in advance!

Todd
