RE: ao51 what a disappointment???? (regarding TS-2000 and tone access)

Perry,

I'm sorry you have not yet had much luck with AO-51/ECHO using you TS-2000.

As you may well know, the TS-2000 will not enable subtones in Sat mode. I
have no idea why, but it's a pain.

I have attempted to enable subtones via the acsii control port, but as
expected that too is locked out. Maybe Kenwood had a reason.

Unitrac will not be able to enable the subtone feature if the Kenwood
firmware does not permit it.

Anyway, I have instead set the radio to split mode, which does allow the
subtone to be turned on and set to 67 Hz.

No longer full duplex, but I have now worked one or more contacts on each
pass that I have attempted. I should put this in context and explain that I
am in New Zealand and I have not yet heard more than about 5 different
stations on from New Zealand, and another 5 or so from Australia, so we do
not have the sharing issue of North America.

I intend to try and build a small external tone osc set for 67 Hz so I can
feed it in via the external mic connection on the rear ACC2 jack of the
TS-2000(X)(B). If I can get it on 67 Hz and stable, and set the levels
right, I hope I can then use the radio in full duplex sat mode which will
allow me to monitor my uplink.

This idea (external feed of subtone) may also be useful for other radios
including older ones that don't even have subtones. Its not really a hard
concept, but a shame the radio does not already do it!

I'll drop another note here in due course if I get something working.

Only problem I see right off is if there is a high-pass filter that will
block the tones.

I would love to hear from anyone that's already done this, on a Kenwood or
otherwise.

Regards,
Jim, ZL1TYF
