Russia: Preparation for 29 Jun Launch of 8 Foreign Satellites Ends at
Baikonur Cosmodrome

Moscow ITAR-TASS in English 0858 GMT 28 Jun 04

MOSCOW, June 28 (Itar-Tass) - Preparations for the launch of eight
satellites of four countries - France, Italy, the United States and
Saudi Arabia have been completed at the Baikonur cosmodrome, Russian
Space Troops sources told Itar-Tass on Monday.

The satellites are scheduled to be launched on June 29.

The Russian-Ukrainian Kosmotrans Company will place in orbit
micro-satellites Demeter (France), UniSat-3 (Italy), SaudiSat-2,
SaudiComsat-1, SaudiComsat-2 (Saudi Arabia) and LatinSat-C, LatinSat-D
and AMSat-Echo (U.S.) with the help of the Dnepr conversion booster
rocket.

In accordance with initial plans, Dnepr was to orbit the AKS-1
technological satellite of Russia as well, however the preparation of
this micro-satellite for launch was suspended on June 19 for technical
reasons.

Since 1999, three launches of the Dnepr booster rocket have been
carried out from the Baikonur launch pad. The Dnepr conversion booster
is derivative of the intercontinental ballistic missile RS-20 (foreign
classification SS-18 Satan).

The booster is highly reliable and inexpensive system of delivery into
space of up to 3,500 kilogrammes of payload.

War missiles of this class are on combat alert duty of Russia's
Strategic Missile Troops.
