 Could the "noise" that Colin heard be the beacon oscillator not quite
oscillating (due to low voltage?)

I remember having a UHF FM base station that I "modified" for 70cm use many
years back where the crystal sometimes did no go but the whole line up acted
like a powerful noise generator over a fairly discreet band of frequencies.
I wasn't very popular!
