[amsat-bb] Uplink antenna for AO-7 mode B ?

I am trying to work AO-7 in mode B.  I can heard the downlink with a preamp.  I am using an ICOM 706MKIIG as my UHF uplink into a groundplane (i.e. small one like radio shack or mfj variety) but cant hear myself on the bird.  Do I need to use a beam ?
