RE: AM on sats




Amateur radio satellites do not force you to pay for the power you
use that is taking from others.  If you want to run 9 KW's at home,
then that is between you and your power company.


The transmitter power you consume in AM and FM is not strictly limited
to that driven by your modulating voice.  When you are silent,
your carrier is still there stealing power from the others in the
passband that would like to use the satellite.  It is most inconsiderate
to use these methods of voice transmission.  I view them as a completely
separate thing from constant envelope data/video transmission where you need
all of the power to communicate your message.
