100BaseT Woes - Resolved
Hello Everyone
After reading the 50 or so emails I received, I considered the bulk of the
evidence:
1) Attaching or detaching the WAN cable had no effect (Problem on the LAN
side).
2) Attaching or detaching the LAN cable that is hooked to the wireless hub
had no effect. (Cable born RFI)
3) Adding toriods to the cables and power input had no effect. (Maybe
still in the cables, maybe not)
4) The interference disappeared with no cables attached (RFI radiating off
the cables? Perhaps, but...)
5) Interference still present on a HT (meaning, not up on my outside
antennas) even with no cables (RFI being generated in the box)
6) Disconnecting the power supply kills the interference (not a defective
power supply.)
So considering this, I went and bought a new router by a different
manufacturer. Problem solved!
Thanks to everyone who wrote in. It provided some good things to check and
consider.
I don't want to condemn of the Linksys BEFSR41 Router, which I think is a
fine router. I have one of the real early ones - $199 worth of early when
I bought it (they are now about $49.) Many people wrote to say they had no
problem with it. So perhaps it's something Linksys fixed in later versions.
For those who are wondering what I bought, I bought a D-Link DI-604. My
wireless adapters and NICs are all D-Link products, so it made sense to go
with a brand I trusted.
73 and thanks again for all the great suggestions,
Emily
