One thing I found that made it easier to build the Egg-II, was to heat
the end of the wire to cherry-red, and then quench it in water to anneal
it. It makes the copper dead-soft, and very easy to form a loop in. I've
had no problem getting the VSWR down below 1.5:1 on any of the Egg-II's
I've built. The 144MHz and 137MHz units I made used copper tubing and
elbows, but I've built several for 440, and the military UHF freqs
without problem.
